    Gabriel Magalhaes and Arsenal

Gabriel Teodoro Martinelli Silva joined the north London club Arsenal from Brazilian side Ituano in July 2019. The electric-fire defender has scored ten times with a total and won the Arsenal Goal of the Season award for a stunning solo effort in a 2-2 draw at Chelsea during his debut season.

After the Brazilian defender handed PSG a dramatic shootout victory in Budapest by missing the penalty, although Gabriel’s pain still remains fresh, the kind of widespread support from teammates, coaches, and fans, many of whom praised his willingness to take responsibility when it mattered most made the player determined to look ahead rather than dwell on one difficult moment.

His wonderful season was 2022/23 when he scored 15 goals for the club and he will still go to be part of Arsenal next year’s success story following suit of John Terry after 2008 lost penalty in the final and later won the Champions League in 2011/12.

  • Understand movement in football

    Understand movement in football

The joy of the game of football is goal scoring, but it is not possible to score a goal without movement and good ball passing, but most coaches spend more time teaching ball passes. Why is it not all about ball passes alone? Some coaches teach rondos to increase movement in football. Now some players can make hundreds of complete passes in Rondos without moving?
Remember you can drop millions of passes to each without adding meaning to the game if there is no movement either on the ball or off the ball.

Answer this question by yourself: who is the most dangerous player within player while running and the player without the ball?

This makes me remember a statement by Lengend Cruyff, who said, “It’s about always thinking. Always moving. If you stand still, you can’t help your teammates or the team.

    What is movement in football?
Movement in football is the purposeful, off-the-ball movement of players across vertical, horizontal, and diagonal spaces to create passing lanes, exploit gaps in the defense, and support teammates. It is a critical, dynamic action that keeps the game fluid, prevents the team from becoming predictable, and helps break down defensive lines, such as through in-behind runs.

What does movement do in football?

Movement improves ball circulation and game flow.
A team without movement becomes slow, predictable, and easy to press. On the other hand, when all players move based on the ball and their teammates, the game flows, positional advantages emerge, and space opens up to advance forward.

Direct impact of good off-the-ball movement:

Multiple passing options during every phase of play.
    Encourages fast, clean ball circulation.
Reduces pressure from the opponent, by offering constant solutions.
Creates temporary overloads, through supporting runs.

    Drill for movement

There are many drills for movement, but let’s just mention a little here.

Ball possession drills, by making it one- or two-touch.

    High-intensity small-sided games
2v1 inside a box. This can be done by arranging an 18yard box and certain players are a group of 3 having a ball for each group to play 2v1, making 10 touches, one goal, etc.

You can search online for movement drills.

Remember, movement does not just have to be flashing but just has to be smart. It’s just about supporting your teammates to keep possession of life. Thanks

  • Challenges facing Nigerian football development

    Challenges facing Nigerian football development

The Nigeria u17 Team is the most successful team in the tournament’s history, with five titles and three runners-up. Brazil is the second-most successful with four titles and two runners-up. Ghana and Mexico have each won the tournament twice, Despite being one of the top youth countries in the world, when was the last time they qualified or did well in the category?

A lot of unseeing hidden factors are killing our football development in Nigeria, although political instability and governance issues are major challenges to Nigeria’s football development. Frequent changes in government often lead to policy inconsistency, affecting long-term development plans. Corruption is another significant issue, but there are others such as

Selection of players based on federal character, godfatherism, and favoritism, rather than on merit and performance.

Rotation of football coaches across all age categories

Transfer of interest like in the olden days, the interests of the majority were in the local team, not now when everybody is crazy about foreign teams.

No team performance analysts across any of the national teams

Most parents don’t see football as a profession. They see it as a wasting of time, which is not like that in the developing world. Just tell me how profession pay, like football.

There is no age grade developmental program like in most developed countries. There are leagues for age grades from u10 to senior categories which are not like in Nigeria and there is a time in Nigeria, in particular, Ibadan Liberty Stadium, where the NFF u12 tournament was organized to develop young people, but after the first edition, the tournament was stopped.

Recycling players who are already past their prime, yet claiming to be young and energetic, making it almost impossible for genuine young talents to emerge and fill the gap.

The killing of school games across the nation and putting a stop to the primary school game really damaged our development stage, our development stage a lot.

Poor motivation for the grassroots clubs and coaches. At least if grants did not come from the grassroots, they should make it compulsory for local government to coach employees in local government.

Turning most of the school field into a house. In the country now, most of the old school fields have started turning into houses.

The influence of social media and the way in which the majority of young people use social media really affects the development of games in the country.
