Kano Pillars have been hit with heavy sanctions by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following crowd violence during their league match against Shooting Stars Sports Club.
The NPFL fined Kano Pillars ₦9.5 million, deducted three points and three goals from the club’s tally, and ordered the indefinite closure of the Sani Abacha Stadium. The club was also directed to play its home matches in Katsina for at least ten games, or until the league is satisfied that proper security measures have been put in place.
According to reports, the sanctions followed a violent incident after Shooting Stars scored a late equaliser. Fans reportedly invaded restricted areas, threw objects, and assaulted match officials and members of the visiting team.
NPFL Sanctions Against Kano Pillars
The punishment includes:
- ₦9.5 million total fine
- Three-point deduction
- Three-goal deduction
- Indefinite closure of Sani Abacha Stadium
- Home matches moved to Katsina for at least ten games
- Order to identify and prosecute those involved
- Submission of a new matchday security and crowd-control plan
The NPFL also stated that Kano Pillars failed to provide adequate security and failed to control their supporters during the match. The league described the incident as a serious breach of professional conduct and a threat to the safety of players, officials, and fans.
This decision is another strong warning from the NPFL against crowd violence in Nigerian football. For Kano Pillars, the sanctions could have a major impact on their season, both on the league table and in terms of matchday support.
The incident also raises fresh concerns about stadium security, fan behaviour, and crowd control in the Nigeria Premier Football League.
The big question now is whether Kano Pillars can recover from the punishment and restore discipline among their supporters.
