DIRECT and INDIRECT STYLE OF PLAY
These are how teams attack.
DIRECT FOOTBALL
This style allows you to get forward fast with the idea to bypass midfield by Ball moves from defense to attack in just 2–3 passes.
Tactics
Long balls, early crosses, second balls, physical strikers, quick transitions.
Strengths
Fast, catches teams out, has good vs. high press, works with pace/power.
Teams known for it
Burnley under Sean Dyche, Sam Allardyce teams, classic Wimbledon
INDIRECT FOOTBALL
This is known to be POSSESSION FOOTBALL done by building through phases with the idea of keeping the ball, drawing opponents out, creating space with lots of passes.
Tactics
Short passing, triangles, positional play, patience, control tempo.
Strengths
Controls the game, tires opponents, creates high-quality opportunities
Teams known for it
Man City, Arsenal under Art eta, Spain tiki-taka, Pep Guardiola teams
WHICH One IS BETTER?
Neither. Because modern top teams use both
Arsenal vs Coventry 3-0: Arsenal were mostly indirect for control, but goal 2 came from a direct Tzolis cross after winning the ball high.
Even Pep’s Man City will go direct if there’s space behind him.
It is just like one fast and the other is slow.
SIDE BY SIDE BREAKDOWN
DIRECT TEAM
In the direct football for the Goal Kick, the goalkeeper launches onto the striker’s head.
When playing with a team
Low block Cross early, shoot from distance and once they
Winning the ball in midfield First look: pass from behind First look:
BEST PLAYER TYPES FOR DIRECT FOOTBALL
1. THE TARGET MAN number 9, which is Job : Win the first ball plus flick it on. Hold up play.
Key Qualities
– Aerial dominance*: 6’3″ plus jumps like a center back
– Strength : Hold off Central back with back to goal
– Work rate : Chase lost causes, wins second balls
Examples of the players
Erling Haaland, Andy Carroll, Peter Crouch, Victor Osimhen, Yakubu
Why:He’s the release valve. GK to him, then everyone runs off him.
2. THE PACE MERCHANT WINGER / STRIKER, which is
Job : Run in behind defense immediately
Key Qualities*:
– *Explosive speed*: 0–100 in 3 seconds
– Direct dribbling :Take first man on, don’t come back for the ball
– Finishing on the run: 1v1 composure
Examples of the players
Jamie Vardy, Adama Traoré, Mykhailo Mudryk, Lookman
Why : Ball goes over the top until he’s gone. 2 passes = goal.
3. THE “LAUNCHER Goalkeeper / central back / defensive midfielder who is
My job is to bypass midfield with 1 pass.
Key Qualities
– Long passing range :60-yard diagonals, accurate
– Vision: See the run early
– No fear : Won’t take extra touch
Examples of players are
David Raya long ball, Van Dijk, Declan Rice, Nick Pope
Why : If your number 6 can’t hit a 50-yard ball, you can’t play direct.
4. THE SECOND BALL MIDFIELDER number 8 / Central midfielder
Job : Win knockdowns plus break lines
Key Qualities
– Aggression: First to every 50/50
– Box-to-box engine: Sprint forward to support attack
– Simple passing : 1–2 touches, play forward
Examples of players are N’Golo Kate, Wilfred Nidi, Roy Keane.
Why : The target man flicks it until he picks it up to feed the runner?
5. THE CROSSING MACHINE — FULLBACK / WINGER
Which is Job is to get to the byline fast and put it in
Key Qualities
– Stamina : Up and down all game
– Early cross : Don’t cut inside and recycle
– Delivery : Whip it to back post / front post
Examples of the players are
Trent Alexander-Arnold long cross, Kieran Trippier
Summary: For direct football, you need totally different players. You need athletes plus fighters, because for direct football, players are built for war. If they’re not faster, stronger, or braver than the opponent, the system fails.
INDIRECT TEAM
In the indirect football for the Goal Kick, the goalkeeper plays to Central back build from back to
Keep the ball and recycle the play from left to right.
When playing with a team
Low block pass around until a gap opens
Best player type for the indirect
Here are the 7 non-negotiable qualities every top indirect player must have:
1. TECHNICAL QUALITY
– First touch:Ball sticks. Kills the press. 1 bad touch = turnover and counter
– Passing range : five-yard pass AND a 40-yard switch. Both feet preferred
– Ball retention :Can receive with a man on his back and not lose it
_Example: Ødegaard can take a ball under pressure and play it out with 1 touch.
2. FOOTBALL IQ / GAME READING
– Scanning: Checks shoulder every 2 seconds before receiving
– Spatial awareness : Sees the free man before he’s free
– Decision-making :Knows when to keep it vs when to play risk pass
_Example: Rodi knows where all 22 players are without looking_
3. COMPOSURE UNDER PRESS
– No panic:When 2 men press, don’t just boot it.
– Body shape :Receives on half-turn to see the whole pitch
– Press resistance:Uses body to shield, dribbles to escape tight areas
_Example: Bernardo Silva in a phone booth with 3 defenders around him.
4. MOVEMENT OFF THE BALL
– Find space : Don’t just stand and wait for the ball.
. Create overloads :Drags defenders to make 3v2 somewhere else’s
.Third-man runs:Pass and move to create triangles
_Example: De Bryne ghosts into pockets between CB and CM_
5.WORK RATE PLUS POSITIONAL DISCIPLINE
Indirect teams lose the ball high. So every player must press immediately.
Counter-press Win it back in five seconds
Structure Stays in position to keep passing lanes open
_Example: Man City players all within 15 yards of each other_
6.COMMUNICATION
Talk constantly: Man on, Turn, Switch
Leadership Dictates tempo. Slows it down or speeds it up
_Example: Xavi used to point where he wanted the ball 3 passes before_
7 VERSATILITY
Modern indirect players can’t be one-position robots.
– Central back must step into midfield like Stones
– Wingers must come inside like Saka
-nine seconds must drop deep like Havertz/Kane
In SUMMARY, For indirect, you need players who can keep the ball alive and think two passes ahead.
Because it’s not about pace and power. It’s about brains plus technique.
WORST PLAYER TYPE FOR INDIRECT
1. Head-down dribbler who loses the ball too much
2. Run in behind the striker. There is only no one to pass to
3. Panic defender just clears it every time
With my observation, MODERN FOOTBALL is HYBRID.
Almost no top team is 100% one or the other now.
Arsenal 2026 Mostly indirect to control games. But vs Coventry in the opening of the 2026/27 season, one of his goals was direct: Tzolis won the ball high → 2 passes → Havertz’s goal.
Man City70% possession, but will hit Haaland with a direct ball if space opens.
How to spot the team who is playing either Direct and Indirect football is just easy by counting how many passes it takes to get to goal?”
If 5 passes it Direct
If 10 passes, then it is indirect.
