After the Golden Eaglets, the Nigeria U-17 2-3, lost to Tanzania U-17 in their opening fixture on 5th July. The Golden Eaglets suffered another 4-2 defeat to Australia in their second match yesterday at the Same Four-Nation Invitational Tournament in China. This makes it back-to-back losses for Nigeria, who have now conceded seven goals while scoring four across their opening two games.
Despite the disappointing start, the Golden Eaglets will be determined to bounce back when they face tournament hosts China in their final match on Saturday, with hopes of ending their campaign on a positive note.
My concern is, can this current set of Golden Eagles break past Jinx? They won the u-17 African Cup Nations Cup and the U-17 World Cup. Remember, Nigeria won Nations Cup u-17 last time in 2007, which was 19 years ago, as the second title during the era of Sanctus, but they did so with a 100% win record with
5 Games Played
5 Games Won
15 Goals Scored
1 Goal Conceded
Here is the analysis of goals scored by U-17 African Cup nations: Eight goals were scored in the match against Eritrea and in the match against Burkinafaso ended 2-1 in favor of Nigeria, which happens to be the only match Nigeria conceded. Tunisia vs Nigeria ended 2-0. Nigeria defeated Togo by 1-0.
And The Golden Eaglets were crowned champions of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2015. The last time Nigeria qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup was in 2019 when the tournament was hosted in Brazil.
This recalls me back to Macauley Chrisantus, a wonderful striker who did wonderfully well in the U-17 FIFA World Cup with 7 goals to collect the golden boot, followed by Ghana’s Ransford and Toni Kronos respectively.
