The tournament, like the Governor’s Cup, was initially dominated by Lagosian teams. Later it was known as the Nigeria FA Cup (1954–1959), Nigeria Challenge Cup (1960–1998), Coca-Cola FA Cup (1999–2008) and Nigeria Federation Cup (2009–2016).

It is a repeat of past history and supremacy battle between arch-rivals, Shooting Stars of Ibadan and Crown FC of Ogbomosho as the Oyo FA Cup enters the final stage on Sunday at Lekan Salami Stadium Adamasingba, Ibadan. The Ibadan soccerlords have narrowed escape over their rivals, Ajilite Warriors, in recent meetings, with 1–0 victories in 2017,2018 and 2019. On 23 February 2025, both sides were out to battle for the Oyo Star 2025 FA Cup.

Ayobami Junior’s 29-minute goal made the Shooting Stars winners in the encounter at the Lekan Salami Stadium 2019 final and penalties were used to decide this year’s FA Cup.

Other qualified teams are Imperial FC and Beyond Limits FC from Ogun, Lobi Stars and Flight FC from Benue, Ikorodu City and Inter Lagos from Lagos State, Rivers United and Wilbros FC from Rivers State, Nasarawa United, Basira FC, Sunshine Stars, Sunshine Stars U-19, Akwa United, Eagle Eye FA,

Jnr Danburam, Cynosure FC, Abakaliki FC, Bayelsa United, Crusaders FC, Plateau United, Mighty Jets, Kano Pillars, Barau FC, Heartland, OISA FC qualified from Imo State, Enyimba and Ahudiyannem FC from Abia, while Kwara United and Abubakar Bukola Saraki FC picked the slots from Kwara State.

For this year, there are twelve teams from the NPFL.
